Are The Children’s Toys You Are Gifting Actually Safe?
With the holidays fast approaching, it’s likely you’ve seen ads for the latest and greatest toys or have passed by aisles of shiny new toys at the stores. While there are many exciting options to choose from that will be sure to delight your children, nieces, cousins, etc. it’s very important to keep safety top of mind when shopping for the perfect gift.
You may not give a second thought to a children’s toy and think they are fun and harmless. In fact, many do look safe, which can be deceiving. Unfortunately, the risks are real. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, 251,700 toy-related injuries in the U.S. in 2017.
What Popular Children’s Toys Are Considered Dangerous?
World Against Toys Causing Harm (W.A.T.C.H) is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to educate the public about dangerous toys and toy safety. Each year before the holidays, W.A.T.C.H releases a Top 10 Dangerous Toys list.
Let’s take a closer look at a few of these toys, and why they are considered harmful.
Nickelodeon Frozen Slime Treats – It’s hard to resist slime, and this make-your-own slime kit is designed to look like popular frozen sweet treats, such as soft serve, snow cone and mint chocolate chip.
However, this marketing can be deceiving as it may seem to children as though the slime is edible since it looks like food, and the slime is scented to smell like these summertime treats. Yet, the slime contains harmful chemicals and is not to be consumed.
Pogo Trick Board – The package for the toy shows children balancing on the trick board, and not everyone has protective gear, which is misleading as there is a significant risk for head injuries.
Those using the board should always wear helmets and knee pads, and use caution.
Spike the Fine Motor Hedgehog – Although this hedgehog toy looks cute and harmless, the toy has removable 3-inch-long “quills which could pose a serious risk for choking hazards to the small children it is marketed to.
What Should You Keep in Mind When Shopping?
It is important to pay close attention to warnings and age restrictions listed. You should avoid toys that contain parts that could be choking hazards and ensure the toys are well-made.
We hope by being cautious when choosing gifts and, everyone can enjoy a happy and safe holiday season!
